Medical · What is Selank?

Selank is a short peptide best known for its use and study in anxiety, stress and calm concentration. People usually encounter it as nasal drops or a nasal spray. The attraction is easy to understand: feeling less overwhelmed while remaining alert enough to work, learn and take part in everyday life.

Selank was developed in Russia from tuftsin, a naturally occurring peptide involved in immune activity. The finished molecule contains seven amino acids, the small building blocks that make up proteins. Its connection to tuftsin helps explain its research history, but Selank is primarily discussed as a brain-active peptide rather than a nutritional supplement.

The most useful way to understand Selank is as a possible anxiety treatment with a relatively small body of human research. It is not a stimulant, a sleep hormone or an antidepressant equivalent. Its effects, preparation and evidence also differ from Semax, despite the two often appearing together in nootropic discussions.

Someone hoping to feel calmer may also be hoping to sleep better, concentrate more easily or stop feeling physically tense. Those are worthwhile goals to track separately. An improvement in one does not automatically mean that Selank has directly treated all the others.

Medical · Benefits and common reasons for interest

Anxiety and stress

Anxiety can involve persistent worry, an uncomfortable sense of threat, muscle tension and difficulty switching off. Small Russian clinical studies have reported improvements in anxiety symptoms with Selank. This is the main human research behind its reputation as a calming peptide.

Those studies provide a reason for interest, but they do not tell us how reliably every nasal preparation will work or how it compares with all established anxiety treatments. People with ongoing anxiety benefit from understanding the cause and available treatment options, including psychological treatment, rather than judging success only by whether a spray produces an immediate sensation.

Calm focus

Being less anxious can make it easier to concentrate: there is less worry competing for attention. That is different from directly improving memory or intelligence. A useful goal might be completing a reading session without repeatedly losing focus, rather than expecting a dramatic nootropic effect.

Sleep and emotional resilience

Some people discuss Selank because evening worry interferes with sleep. A calmer evening could help, but it does not make Selank a treatment for every cause of insomnia. Snoring with pauses in breathing, persistent depression, pain and stimulant use need their own attention.

Immune support

Selank has laboratory research relating to immune signalling. This does not establish that it prevents infections or that someone should take it to “boost” immunity. The anxiety discussion and immune research should remain separate.

Medical · How does it work?

Brain cells use chemical messengers to communicate. One of these, GABA, helps restrain excessive activity in many brain circuits. Selank research has explored changes in GABA-related signalling and in other systems involved in the stress response.

That does not mean Selank acts exactly like a benzodiazepine. Sharing an interest in the same signalling system does not make two treatments interchangeable, nor does it establish that one has no dependence, withdrawal or interaction risks.

Researchers have also investigated enkephalins, naturally occurring peptides involved in pain and stress signalling. Laboratory work suggests Selank can affect enzymes involved in their breakdown. These findings help explain why researchers study it; they do not provide a simple formula for predicting an individual person's response.

The practical distinction is between changing a signal and producing a useful result. Feeling calmer, functioning better and avoiding unwanted effects matter more than an impressive list of neurotransmitters.

Medical · Selank, Semax and modified versions

Selank is generally discussed for anxiety and calmness; Semax is more often discussed for attention and neurological recovery. Neither description guarantees an effect, and combining them makes it harder to identify which compound caused a change.

N-acetyl Selank and amidated derivatives are chemically modified versions. A modification may change breakdown or delivery, but it does not automatically make the product stronger, longer lasting or better studied. Keep the exact name in your records. Do not transfer a dose from ordinary Selank to a derivative merely because both names contain “Selank.”

Medical · Dosing and concentration

Read the concentration first

A 0.15% weight/volume nasal solution contains 1.5 mg per mL, or 1,500 micrograms per mL. The number of micrograms delivered depends on how much liquid the particular dropper or pump releases.

For example, if a device is documented to deliver 0.05 mL, that volume of a 1.5 mg/mL solution contains 75 micrograms. This demonstrates the calculation; it does not establish the output of an unidentified pump or prescribe a number of sprays.

Why published and online amounts differ

Medical references and clinical reports concern particular nasal formulations. Online instructions often describe different concentrations, spray devices, derivatives or routes. A daily amount copied without those details can be misleading even when the arithmetic looks correct.

A range of 250–900 micrograms per day appears in wellness discussions, but it is not a verified instruction for every nasal preparation. This profile instead makes the preparation and amount per administration explicit: use the directions belonging to the actual medicinal formulation and have a clinician confirm the schedule for the problem being treated. An injection schedule cannot be calculated from nasal-drop directions.

Record concentration, output per spray or drop, number used and total micrograms. If the delivered volume is not documented, the amount cannot be reconstructed accurately from “two sprays.”

Medical · Preparation and reconstitution

A ready-made nasal solution

Ready-made drops are already formulated. They should not be topped up with bacteriostatic water. Adding liquid changes concentration and may alter the preservative balance, acidity and suitability for the nose.

Keep the original dispenser with its bottle. If a pump requires priming, follow its own directions; priming sprays are not administrations. Do not transfer a nasal solution into an injection vial.

A lyophilised vial

Lyophilised means freeze-dried. Reconstitution means adding an appropriate liquid to dissolve the peptide. A dissolved peptide is not necessarily a correctly formulated nasal medicine: the liquid base, concentration, acidity, preservative, container and pump all affect the finished preparation.

Bacteriostatic water usually contains benzyl alcohol. It is not an automatic substitute for the liquid used in a formulated nasal product. The preservative in the documented 0.15% Selank nasal preparation is different. Choosing a diluent therefore requires instructions for the specific preparation, not a general peptide recipe.

Before a prepared product is used, its record should identify the exact compound, amount, final volume, route, preparation date and after-opening limit. A missing pump output is a missing dose measurement, not a cosmetic labelling detail.

Medical · Administration

Nasal administration places liquid on the lining inside the nose. A blocked or irritated nose can make delivery less predictable. Follow the product's positioning instructions, keep the dispenser tip clean and avoid sharing the bottle.

Drops and sprays are different devices. Forcefully sniffing liquid into the throat is not evidence of better brain delivery; an unpleasant taste can mean some liquid has drained backwards. Do not immediately repeat an amount because the taste or sensation was different.

Subcutaneous administration means injection into the fatty tissue below the skin. Selank's nasal research does not establish a matching injectable amount, preparation method or preferred injection site. A nasal bottle must never be used for injection. The same peptide name on a label does not make routes interchangeable.

Medical · Routes and bioavailability

Swallowed peptides encounter stomach acid, digestive enzymes and the intestinal barrier. Some peptide molecules are broken down before enough intact compound reaches the bloodstream. Nasal delivery avoids that initial digestive route, although absorption still depends on the formulation and technique.

This does not mean all nasal Selank reaches the brain, nor that injection is automatically more effective. Bloodstream exposure and brain exposure are different measurements. A precise percentage needs a study of the specific route and preparation.

Oral delivery can make sense for some medicines whose target is the gut lining itself. That is a compound-specific reason, not a general justification for swallowing Selank. The existing anxiety research does not establish Selank as a local gut treatment.

Medical · Half-life

Selank is broken down quickly, on a timescale of minutes. A well-characterised human nasal elimination half-life is not available from the clinical reports used here. The often-repeated “2–3 minutes” should not be presented as a confirmed measurement for every nasal product.

A brief presence in blood does not mean any calming effect must end within minutes. Equally, reports of longer effects do not establish a fixed 12- or 24-hour duration or a redosing interval.

Medical · Storage

Keep nasal products under their own labelled temperature and after-opening conditions. Refrigeration instructions for one finished solution do not establish a shelf life for another concentration or a home-prepared bottle.

Record opening date and discard date separately from the printed expiry. Protect the container from heat, keep the cap on and avoid touching the dispenser tip. Do not freeze a product unless its directions explicitly permit it.

A clear-looking solution can still be contaminated. Changes in appearance, a damaged dispenser or an uncertain storage history are reasons to have the product assessed, rather than adding preservative or filtering it at home.

Medical · Contraindications and side effects

The Russian medical reference excludes pregnancy, breastfeeding, people under 18 and hypersensitivity to the active substance. Nasal irritation, unpleasant taste and allergic reactions are relevant practical concerns.

Tell the treating clinician about sedatives, psychiatric medicines, alcohol use and other nootropics. A small study reporting good tolerability does not establish the safety of every combination. Do not stop a prescribed anxiety medicine abruptly to replace it with Selank.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse or a severe reaction. A major deterioration in mood, agitation or inability to function also calls for medical assessment rather than increasing the amount.

Medical · Nutrition and supplement support

Make the calming goal easier to assess

Caffeine, nicotine, irregular meals and alcohol can all complicate the picture when someone is tracking anxiety or sleep. Record these alongside symptoms. Cutting back a large caffeine intake gradually may reveal more than adding several supplements at once.

Regular meals containing protein, fibre-rich carbohydrate and some fat support a steadier routine. This is not a special Selank diet; it helps separate the peptide's possible effects from hunger, poor sleep and stimulant use.

Magnesium

Magnesium contributes to normal nerve and muscle function. Nuts, beans, whole grains and leafy vegetables are useful food sources. Supplementation is most clearly relevant when intake is inadequate or a deficiency is identified. It should not be presented as a proven Selank enhancer.

Supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhoea, and kidney disease changes its safety. The amount on a label should be read as elemental magnesium, rather than the total weight of the magnesium-containing compound.

B vitamins and iron

Vitamin B12 deficiency can contribute to neurological symptoms and fatigue. Iron deficiency can also leave someone exhausted and less able to concentrate. Testing and correcting a likely deficiency is more useful than assuming every concentration problem needs a high-dose “brain” blend.

Extra B vitamins are not automatically better. Long-term excess vitamin B6 can itself damage nerves. Iron should not be taken simply because fatigue is present; the cause needs to be identified.

Calming supplements

L-theanine, melatonin and herbal sleep products are often discussed alongside nootropics. They have different purposes and can change sleepiness or alertness independently. Introducing several together makes both benefit and side effects difficult to attribute. Keep a complete supplement list and review combinations with existing medicines.

Medical · Tracking progress and everyday questions

Choose one or two goals before comparing days: time spent worrying, ability to complete a task, or how long it takes to fall asleep. Record a baseline first and keep the same simple scale. Include unwanted effects and days with no improvement.

“Calm” should still allow normal alertness and engagement. Feeling emotionally flat, unusually sleepy or impaired is not a target to pursue.

Does Selank replace therapy? No. It does not teach coping skills or resolve the underlying circumstances driving anxiety. Can it be combined with Semax? Co-use is discussed online, but an established advantage over using either alone has not been demonstrated by the sources reviewed here.

Medical · Medical

A 2014 comparative study enrolled 60 people with anxiety-related disorders and reported anxiety improvement with Selank compared with phenazepam. An earlier 2008 report also examined anxiety disorders and neurasthenia. These are relevant human observations, but small studies from a limited research setting do not settle long-term effectiveness or safety across products.

The medical formulation reference is useful for concentration, excipients and exclusions. Its formulation information should not be transferred to derivatives, injectable preparations or an unverified spray device. Selank does not have a U.S. FDA-approved anxiety indication.
